About Semitropic

For more than six decades, Semitropic Water Storage District has played a vital role in sustaining Kern County’s agricultural economy. Covering more than 220,000 acres in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley, the District provides the water management infrastructure and reliable water supplies essential to one of the most productive agricultural regions in California. Through responsible groundwater management, strategic investments in water infrastructure, and innovative water supply programs, Semitropic helps local growers remain productive and resilient in the face of California’s changing water conditions.

Groundwater Banking & Sustainability

Building on its agricultural foundation, the District developed the Semitropic Groundwater Bank, one of California’s largest groundwater banking operations. With 1.65 million acre-feet of storage capacity and a strategic location near the California Aqueduct, the program stores available surface water during wet years for recovery during dry periods, strengthening water supply reliability for local agriculture and communities throughout California.
